Dunmore's story began in 1835 when settlers first established this community, which was officially incorporated as a borough in 1862. The area's European history dates back even earlier to 1742, when Count Zinzendorf of Saxony arrived as a missionary to the native Munsee-speaking Lenape people. The land was purchased from the natives in 1754 by Connecticut's Susquehanna Company, and the first permanent settlers arrived in 1771, also hailing from Connecticut.
Originally known as "Bucktown" or "Corners," the area saw its first business ventures in 1820 when Stephen Tripp built a saw and grist mill along Roaring Brook. The small village of just four houses remained modest until the Pennsylvania Coal Company transformed it into a thriving, diverse town in 1847-1848. By 1875, the township of Providence was dissolved, and Dunmore emerged as one of several independent boroughs.
