How Much Early Scranton History Do You Know?
Millions of Americans who’ve never been to Pennsylvania would recognize Scranton as the setting of an extremely popular and iconic workplace comedy, but we have centuries of history. Scranton’s roots trace back to 1771, when Isaac Tripp became the area’s first known white settler, building a home that still stands today in what was once the separate town of Providence, now North Scranton. Following the Revolutionary War, families from Connecticut began arriving in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, drawn by their state’s colonial claims to the region.
These New England settlers established mills and small businesses in a village they called Slocum Hollow, bringing with them distinct traditions and speech patterns that set the area apart from the rest of Pennsylvania. The competing territorial claims between Connecticut and Pennsylvania eventually led to the Pennamite Wars, a dispute that was ultimately resolved through federal negotiation after the Revolutionary War, paving the way for Scranton’s development into the thriving city it is today.
